Better Beaches OBX is Started!
Welcome to our group! The Outer Banks of North Carolina boasts some of the best beaches in the world! Why do we need a group focused on the betterment of these beaches? After witnessing SuperStorm Sandy, and its impact in the various areas of the Outer Banks, Better Beaches OBX formed to help raise awareness about the importance of our beaches in relation to our protection as well as our economy. Acknowledgement of the value of our coastline is crucial to the understanding that it must be maintained if we want to continue with our way of life here.
Why now? Our governments and our people have been debating about various aspects of maintenance and protection for decades, and many studies have been done and plans drawn up. Raising money to fund larger projects has been a challenge for all this time. When requests for changes have been made, many people are not focused on, or understanding of, the issues and the subsequent possibilities. We witnessed first hand how well large scale projects held up in a major storm like Sandy, as well as other natural defenses that benefitted certain areas. Through this experience we, as well as others, realized that we can work with nature and make a difference. Better Beaches OBX hopes to make this difference through discussion, education, and participation and help create a more sustainable future for our area which locals and visitors can all enjoy!
